Most import guides for Spain are the EU guide with the word Spain pasted over it. That is nearly right and it is wrong in one specific place, which is the place a Spanish buyer is most likely to get caught out: Spain is not one customs territory for VAT purposes, and where you live inside Spain changes what happens to your box.
Start with the honest disclaimer, because it governs everything below. This page carries no rates, no thresholds and no fee amounts. Not because they are secret, but because they change, and a number written into a page like this outlives its own accuracy. The current version is on the Agencia Tributaria's site on the day you order. None of this is legal advice or tax advice.
The peninsula: what the machinery does
For an address in Madrid, Valencia or Palma, the sequence is the standard EU one and there is nothing Spanish about it.
The parcel arrives from outside the Union with electronic data already sent ahead. Something has to be declared to customs on its behalf, and in Spain that declaration is the DUA, the Documento Único Administrativo — the Spanish name for the same single administrative document the whole bloc uses. Almost nobody reading this fills one in; whoever carries the parcel does it as your representative, and then charges you for it.
Two state charges can result. Import IVA is due on commercial goods from the first cent, because the EU removed its exemption for low-value consignments in July 2021 and no small-parcel free pass replaced it. Customs duty is separate, applies by commodity code, and starts above the EU's low-value duty relief line rather than at zero — apparel, footwear and bags each sit in their own bracket once you are over it.
The taxable base is not the item price. It is built from the customs value plus transport, so an expensive line raises the tax on a cheap item. This is why people who compare two quotes on shipping alone are comparing the wrong number.
The charge that is not a tax
Then there is the third line on the bill, and it is the one that generates the complaints. Whoever cleared the parcel — Correos for post, an express courier otherwise — charges its own fee for the paperwork. That money goes to the carrier, not to the state. It is levied per parcel regardless of how small the tax is, and on a cheap consignment it can exceed the tax it is collecting.
Per parcel is the operative phrase. One consolidated box pays that fee once; four small boxes pay it four times for identical contents, which is the strongest argument for consolidating and has nothing to do with weight. It is not a free win, though: a single box concentrates the whole order's value into one declaration and one thing to lose. Building a rep haul is the same trade-off looked at from the money side.
Ceuta, Melilla and the Canaries are not the same trip
This is the part that is genuinely Spanish. The Balearic Islands are inside the EU VAT area and behave like the peninsula. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are not. They sit outside the EU VAT territory and run their own indirect taxes instead — IGIC in the Canaries, IPSI in Ceuta and Melilla.
Three consequences follow, and they are the reason a thread written by someone in Barcelona can be useless to someone in Las Palmas:
- The charge you meet is not peninsular IVA and is not calculated the same way, so a figure quoted by a mainland buyer does not transfer.
- Goods moving from mainland Spain to those territories cross a tax border too, which is why some mainland Spanish shops and some forwarders quote islands separately or decline them.
- Delivery timelines and carrier options differ, and an agent's shipping menu that lists "Spain" may or may not mean your address.
If you are in one of those territories, the only sensible move is to ask the agent to confirm in writing that the line they are quoting actually serves it, and to look up the local charge on the official source rather than on a forum written by the mainland.
Replicas are a separate track entirely
Everything above is tax. These are replica goods, and EU customs handle suspected trademark-infringing shipments under a regime that has nothing to do with IVA or duty. A parcel can be completely correct on value and still be stopped on brand, and no shipping line and no declared value removes that possibility.
What happens next — the notification, the deadline, what silence means — is set by that regime and by Spanish procedure, not by anything on this page. What happens if a parcel is seized is the honest version, including how little first-hand experience anyone in this hobby has of it. If official correspondence arrives, that is a question for a lawyer in Spain, not for a site that indexes Reddit comments.
What our own record contains about Spain
Nothing, and the number is easy to give. This site holds 237 quoted comments across 124 sellers and 64 distinct subreddits. None of those subreddits is Spanish-language, no quoted comment describes a Spanish customs charge, a held parcel, or a Correos invoice, and we hold no seizure account from anywhere.
That absence has a cause worth naming. People post when a parcel arrives and a garment looks good. A corpus built out of haul threads systematically under-counts every outcome where nothing arrived, so silence here is a sampling artefact and not reassurance. How we grade evidence sets out why we would rather print the gap than fill it with a plausible percentage.
Practically, the two things worth doing before you pay for international shipping are the same in Alicante as anywhere: get the agent to state which lines currently serve your address and whether the quote is tax-paid or tax-unpaid, and keep the invoice and payment record where you can find them in a hurry. How to pay a shopping agent covers why a written answer beforehand is worth more than a policy page afterwards.
If this is a first order, read how to buy reps before any of this matters. Most Spanish buyers who lose money lose it at a dead link or a bad seller long before a border, which is what the link decoder exists for. The Italian and Polish pages cover the same bloc where the local specifics diverge.
