A US order in this hobby is not one shipment. It is a domestic Chinese delivery, a warehouse stay, a repack, an international leg and a last-mile handoff — and the part American buyers ask about, customs, only touches the last two. Understanding the chain is most of understanding why the answers you find on Reddit contradict each other.

The chain your parcel travels
- The seller ships domestically to your agent's warehouse in China. This is the leg that most often stalls, and it has nothing to do with customs.
- The agent photographs the item. This is your QC moment and the last point where a mistake is cheap.
- You choose items to consolidate into one parcel, pick a shipping line, and pay international shipping by weight and volume.
- The parcel flies, clears customs on arrival, and is handed to a domestic carrier for delivery.
Every complaint that sounds like "customs took forever" needs testing against that list first. A parcel that has not left the warehouse has not reached customs. A parcel sitting at a US facility for four days after a scan is usually in the domestic carrier's hands, not the government's.
Why this page prints no threshold
The low-value duty-free allowance that this entire hobby was built around is the single most volatile rule in it. It was narrowed and then suspended over the course of 2025, and the reporting on that moved faster than any guide could be rewritten.

Whatever the current thresholds are, the structure is stable: import charges are assessed against the declared value of the goods, and they are owed by the importer of record — which, on a personal parcel sent to your address, is you. Whether you meet that charge at the door, through the carrier's portal, or not at all depends on the carrier and on the amount.
Two practical points that do not change with the rules:
- Express couriers usually clear the parcel for you and bill you afterwards. A handling or brokerage fee on top of the tax itself is normal, and it is charged by the carrier rather than the government.
- A charge you refuse is not a charge that disappears. The parcel goes back, or into abeyance, and you have then paid international shipping for nothing.
The declared value question
Every agent checkout asks you to set a declared value for the parcel's contents. That box is a customs declaration.

Agent checkouts offer a menu of lines with opaque names, and the distinctions that matter are these:
- Express — a named international courier carrying the parcel end to end. Fastest, most expensive, most likely to bill you for duty because the paperwork is complete and automated.
- Economy or consolidated — a freight consolidator that flies bulk and hands your parcel to a domestic carrier for the last mile. Cheaper, slower, and tracking often goes quiet in the middle.
- Line restrictions — most lines refuse batteries, liquids and some materials outright. A shoe order rarely trips this; a fragrance or a jacket with a lithium heating element can.
Compare the total landed cost, not the shipping quote. Weight rounding, volumetric charges and the fee your card issuer takes on a foreign transaction all land in the same wallet.
