Yupoo, Weidian, Taobao and 1688 — what each one is

Four names you meet in your first hour of rep shopping, and only three of them are shops. What each platform does, why sellers use them, and what the link shape tells you.

The first confusing thing about buying reps is not the money or the shipping. It is that the place you find the item and the place you buy it are almost never the same website, and nobody says so out loud.

Four names do all the work. Yupoo is where you look. Weidian, Taobao and 1688 are where the thing is actually sold. Understanding which is which removes most of the frustration of a first order.

Yupoo is a photo host, not a shop

Yupoo is an image gallery service. A seller uploads albums of photographs and the album description carries a link out to wherever the item can be bought. There is no cart, no checkout and no stock count, because there is no shop — you are looking at somebody's photo folder.

That is not a metaphor. We scraped the albums of nine sellers to build the shelf, and the gap between "photographed" and "purchasable" is the single largest thing the scrape measured. Of one batch of 589 albums, 487 had a usable product photo and 408 also carried a buy link we could resolve. In a second batch of 502 albums, 315 carried a resolvable link.

Per seller it gets starker, and the spread between stores is the point. At one end, huskyreps contributed 88 items that cleared both tests. At the other, budgetshoess contributed eleven, because most of its albums carry no marketplace link at all. And happywhale contributed five from 132 albums — not a scrape failure, but a seller who brokers over WhatsApp and builds you a link by hand.

So the normal condition of a Yupoo album is: real product, real photograph, no way to buy it without messaging someone. An album with no visible link is not sold out.

Yupoo also fights back in small ways. Its pages escape the equals sign inside link attributes, so a URL copied straight out of the page source can arrive with the item id silently stripped and land you on a bare shop page. And its image server refuses requests that arrive without a Yupoo referrer, which is why album photographs so often break when someone reposts them elsewhere.

A good album carries more than pictures. One commenter's reason for liking a store was exactly that:

in my opinion they have really good pictures of the items because they show u videos of it, pictures of it on and the weight of it

Weight, worn photos, and video are the three things that make an album usable. Most albums have none of them.

Weidian is the seller's own storefront

Weidian is a lightweight storefront platform that grew out of WeChat commerce. It is where most rep sellers actually list, and it is cheap and fast to open a store there.

You can recognise it by the link: an itemID parameter carrying a long number. That number is the item. Everything else in the URL is decoration, which is why a Weidian link survives being mangled better than most.

Taobao is the consumer marketplace

Taobao is the big consumer marketplace, Tmall its brand-store sibling. Some sellers list here instead of, or alongside, Weidian. The link carries a plain id parameter, and the same rule applies: the number is the item.

Taobao listings tend to look more like a normal product page — variants, a spec table, reviews from Chinese buyers. That extra structure is genuinely useful, and machine translation handles it well enough to read measurements off.

1688 is the wholesale tier

1688 is the domestic wholesale side of the same ecosystem. Listings there are written for people buying to resell, so the copy is aimed at a trade buyer rather than at you, and the same goods often sit here one step further up the chain than on a retail storefront.

Its links are shaped differently: the item number sits in the path itself, after the word offer and before the .html, rather than in a query parameter at the end.

Why not just a normal shop

Three reasons, and none of them are about hiding.

Add a fourth if you like: a photo album that links out to a storefront is easy to abandon and rebuild. Links in this space rot constantly, and the link decoder exists because of it — it reads the item id out of a dead URL with no network call, so a link from 2023 still resolves to something buyable today.

What this means for your order

Your agent wants a Weidian, Taobao or 1688 product link. That is the input. A Yupoo album URL is not a product link and will not work, however good the photographs are.

The workflow, then: browse albums, follow the description link out to the marketplace, copy that URL, and paste it into your agent. How to buy reps covers the rest of the sequence.

What we have not established

We have not audited any of these platforms' policies, seller verification, or what happens to a listing that gets reported. We do not know how long a typical rep listing survives, because we have never tracked one over time.

And the numbers above describe nine sellers' albums on the days we scraped them. They are a real measurement of a small sample, not a law about Yupoo. A different set of stores would give different ratios — the point that survives is the direction: far more is photographed than is purchasable.
