Colour is the fault people are most confident about and least often right about. By the time a shade reaches your eye it has passed through a dye bath, a warehouse ceiling light, a phone sensor, an automatic white balance, a compression pass, an upload, and finally a display with its own opinion. Every one of those stages moves it.
So before you decide the grey is wrong, it is worth knowing which of the seven stages you are actually looking at.
Stage one: the dye, which genuinely varies
This is the real one, and it is not a rep-specific problem. Fabric is dyed in lots. Two lots of the same specified colour, from the same mill, come out slightly different, which is why retail garment factories cut a single garment from a single roll and why furniture shops warn you about ordering extra fabric later.
A replica adds two more sources of drift. The reference the factory matched to may have been a photograph rather than a physical sample, and the base fabric may take dye differently from the material the original used. Both push in unpredictable directions, and neither is visible in a listing.

That comment is from 2018, it is one buyer's eye against one retail pair, and it sits on an evidence page behind a password-gated store. It is quoted here for the observation, not as a rating of anyone. Note what makes it useful: it is a comparison against a named reference, in one sentence, with a direction. "Creamier than retail" is information. "Colour is off" is not.
Stage two: the light in the room
Warehouse QC photos are shot under whatever is on the ceiling, and that is usually fluorescent or cheap LED. Those sources have gappy spectra — they emit strongly at some wavelengths and barely at others — so a dye that reflects in one of the gaps renders darker or duller than it will in daylight.
This is also where two colours that match under one light stop matching under another. It is why a black jacket and black trousers can look like the same black in a shop and obviously different outside, and why judging a black or navy item from a warehouse photo is close to worthless.
Stage three: the camera, which is guessing
Auto white balance is a guess about what the light was, made from the scene. A warehouse table that is grey or beige biases that guess for the whole frame. Phone processing then adds saturation, lifts shadows, and applies scene detection that treats clothing as something to make attractive.
Practical consequences, in order of how much they cost people:
- Whites and creams are the least reliable colours in any QC photo. They carry the white balance error directly.
- Saturated reds and oranges clip. Detail inside them disappears, and the shade you see is the edge of what the sensor could record.
- Blacks crush. A photo cannot tell you whether black is truly black or a very dark charcoal.
- Anything shot next to a strong colour picks up its reflection. A red box beside a white shoe tints the shoe.
Stage four: your screen, and the one fix that is free
Your display has a colour temperature, a brightness, a night-shift schedule that warms everything after sunset, and possibly a vivid mode. A second person looking at the same file on a different phone sees a different colour, and neither of you is wrong.
The fix costs nothing: put a known reference in the same frame. Ask the agent to photograph the item next to a plain white sheet of A4 paper. Paper is close enough to neutral that it tells you which way the whole image is shifted, and you can correct for it by eye. This is the single most useful extra request in the QC photo list, and almost nobody makes it.
The same logic applies to the references you compare against. Brand press photography is retouched and lit to sell. Our shelf shows seller photographs we checked for clarity, not for colour fidelity — they are catalogue images, not swatches. The most honest reference available is somebody else's daylight photo of the same item on a normal day, which is the argument for using fit references for colour as well as for fit.
When the colour changes after you own it
Dye that was correct on arrival does not necessarily stay correct, and the failure is faster on cheap dyes than on expensive ones. One comment in the record describes exactly that, and the cause is ordinary:

One buyer, one seller, one habit — the account has since been deleted and their evidence page holds the rest of what we have. The mechanism is not in dispute though: ultraviolet light breaks dye down, and a few hours of direct sun does more to a saturated colour than a month of wear. Dry flat and in shade, which is also what the care guide says for every other reason.
So what is worth refusing over
Refuse on colour when the difference is structural rather than tonal: the wrong colourway entirely, a panel that should be one colour and is another, two pieces of a set that do not match each other in the same photo, or dye that is visibly uneven across a single panel. Those survive every stage above, because they are visible as relationships inside one image rather than as an absolute shade.
Be very slow to refuse on shade alone from a single warehouse photo. Ask for a second image, in a different light, with paper in frame, and judge the item against the retail reference rather than against your memory of it. If it still looks wrong, it probably is — and if the fault is in the dye lot, an exchange from the same run is unlikely to be different, for the same reason that a misplaced print repeats across a run.
