Belgium produces more contradictory rep advice per capita than almost anywhere in Europe, and the reason is not that Belgian customs is unpredictable. It is that a Belgian buyer reads three separate conversations — a French-language one, a Dutch-language one and the big English-language subreddits — and each carries folklore imported from a different country.
The French threads carry French assumptions. The Dutch-language threads carry Dutch ones, which are close but not identical. The English threads are dominated by American and British posters describing systems that have nothing to do with Belgium at all. All three sound local when you read them in your own language.
Underneath, there is one procedure, administered by one authority, and it is the same in Antwerpen and in Liège. This page describes it. It contains no rates, no thresholds and no fee amounts, and the last section explains why.
What is decided at bloc level
Belgium is in the EU, the EU customs union and the EU VAT area, so the substance of your bill is not really a Belgian matter.
- Import VAT is due from the first cent. The EU's exemption for low-value consignments was abolished in July 2021. There is no small-parcel free pass, and any thread assuming one is quoting a rule that stopped existing years ago.
- Duty is a separate charge. It is applied by commodity code and only bites above the EU's low-value duty relief line — but clothing, footwear and bags are not lightly rated once you are past it, and those happen to be most of what this hobby buys.
- The taxable base includes the shipping. It is built from the customs value plus transport and any duty. An expensive line raises the tax on a cheap item, which is a detail almost nobody accounts for when comparing agent quotes.
- Every consignment is declared. Electronic data travels ahead of postal items from outside the Union. Nothing simply appears.
The single Belgian authority for all of it is the FPS Finance customs administration, whatever language the thread you are reading uses for it. There is no separate Flemish or Walloon customs regime for a parcel to fall between.
What is decided in your letterbox
The parts that feel Belgian are operational rather than legal, and there are two of them.
The bill comes from a company. Whoever clears the parcel — bpost for post, an express courier otherwise — acts as your representative, pays the state, then asks you for the tax plus its own handling charge before releasing the box. That handling charge is the carrier's, is levied per parcel, and does not shrink because the tax underneath it is trivial.
Speed and clearance travel together. An express consignment moves fast partly because its paperwork is complete and automated, which is exactly why it generates a charge notice reliably. A consolidated economy line is cheaper, goes quiet in the middle by design, and its silence is normal rather than a sign of trouble. Neither route is a way around anything, and choosing one for the wrong reason is how people talk themselves into paying more for a slower box.
The per-parcel arithmetic, which is the only real lever
Because the handling charge attaches to each parcel rather than to each item, the number of boxes matters more than most buyers expect. One consolidated shipment pays that fee once; four small ones pay it four times before any tax is counted.

That is one buyer describing one arrangement, recorded with its thread on the RepsBrothers page. We are not telling you to do the same thing, and note what consolidation costs you: you wait for the slowest item in the batch, and you put everything into a single object that can be delayed, lost or detained as a unit. Lines, and why we publish no list
Agents offer a rotating menu of lines serving BE, with different weight rules, different sensitivities and different clearance behaviour. Those menus are suspended, renamed and repriced without announcement, so any list of names and transit times is stale within months and misleading within a year.
The durable advice is a question, not a name: before you pay for international shipping, ask your agent in writing which lines currently serve Belgium, whether the quote is tax-paid or tax-unpaid, and what happens if the parcel is charged or held. The track that runs parallel to all of this
These are replicas. Suspected trademark infringement is handled by EU customs under a procedure separate from VAT and duty: the goods are detained, the rights holder is notified, and what arrives is correspondence rather than a parcel.
A consignment can be entirely correct on value and still be stopped on brand, and no line or declared value changes that. Order at a value you would accept losing outright, because that is the genuine downside case. What happens if a parcel is seized is the honest version and admits how thin the first-hand record is.

What Belgian buyers here report
Nothing whatsoever. The corpus behind this site is 237 quoted comments across 124 sellers from sixteen subreddits, and not one is written from Belgium or describes a Belgian charge, hold or clearance.
Nor does anyone have a rate at which Belgian parcels are charged. There is no denominator anywhere in this hobby for that question, which means every percentage you have read on it was invented — our methodology is explicit about the difference between what the record shows and what people wish it showed.
