You paid on Tuesday. On Friday the order line changes to something like "seller reports no stock", and the item you were most looking forward to is the one that evaporated.
The useful question is not whether this is normal. It is where your money is standing at this exact moment, because that determines what you can ask for and who you have to ask.
Your money has already moved twice
By the time the words "out of stock" reach you, two transfers have happened. You funded a balance with your agent. Your agent spent part of that balance with the seller, on a Chinese marketplace or over chat.
The second transfer is the one that matters. If the seller has not yet been paid, the item simply does not get bought and the money stays where it is. If the seller has been paid and cannot supply, somebody has to get it back out of them — and that somebody is your agent, not you and not your card issuer. You have one relationship here, with the agent, and the agent has another, with the seller. Disputes and refunds with a shopping agent sets that structure out in full.
Four different things get called "out of stock"
They are not the same problem and they do not resolve the same way.
- The size is gone, the item is not. The most common case by a distance. The seller has the model in three sizes and yours is not one of them. Sometimes there is a restock date, sometimes there is not.
- The listing was never really stock. A lot of what you see photographed is made to order, in runs, from a factory the seller does not control. "Out of stock" here means the next run has not started.
- The seller took on more orders than they can fill. Nothing is out of stock in any literal sense. The queue is, and yours is at the back of it. A frozen order line and a seller who has stopped replying is the pattern to watch for, and it is covered in what a stalled order actually means.
- The seller is unreachable, so nothing can be bought at all. A different failure wearing the same label. From a 2024 thread about a seller who traded over chat rather than through a marketplace:
So currently, Superbuy is also not allowing purchases from FakeLab as it’s a ‘offline’ store (not weidian/ taobao). FakeLab was responding until a couple of days ago (1 response in 2 days) but now he’s completely vanished.

That thread is linked from the Fakelab evidence page, where you can read the surrounding conversation instead of our excerpt of it.
The first thing to check is the listing itself
Before you write to anybody, open the original product link. If it is still live with your size selectable, the message may be shorthand for something else — a price change, a colour they no longer make, or a refusal to sell to agents. If it has disappeared entirely, you are dealing with a withdrawn product rather than a stock level, and no amount of waiting brings it back.
One buyer described both at once:
I purchased 5 items and after 4 days only 2 have been shipped. Also, the Nike Tech tracksuit I purchased has disappeared from the catalog link (rainbowreps). Now I feel stressed, the seller doesn't respond to me when I contact him on WhatsApp. Can someone please tell me something?

If the link no longer opens at all, paste it into the link decoder — it reads the item id out of the URL's shape rather than fetching anything, so a link that died months ago still resolves to a working buy link.
What a refund actually restores
Almost always, your agent balance. Not your card, not your bank, not the payment method you originally used. That is the detail that surprises people, because a balance credit is only a refund if you were going to buy something else anyway.
Withdrawing a balance back out to a payment method is a separate request, it may carry a fee, and the terms differ by agent and change. Read the current terms of the agent you are using. We do not publish those numbers here, because a stale fee stated confidently is worse than no number at all.
Keep the rest of the parcel alive
The mistake worth avoiding is letting one missing item hold everything else hostage.
- Decide fast whether you are waiting or replacing. If there is no restock date, treat it as replacing.
- Ask for the refund to balance in writing, with the order number in the first line. One order, one ticket.
- Buy the substitute before the storage clock on your other items runs down. Free storage windows are finite and vary by agent.
- Do not re-buy the identical listing from the same seller hoping the answer changes. If it is a made-to-order run, it will not, and you have now got two open lines instead of one.
Buyers do exactly this. In November 2025 one commenter explained why they had just ordered from somebody else:
let me know how long it takes to say seller sent I just recently had problems with Husky saying my order was out of stock after I was waiting a long time so I purchased from rainbow just today

That thread sits on the RAINBOW evidence page. Note what it is and is not: one buyer's account of one wait, not a measurement of how often either seller runs out of anything.
What our record does not contain
We hold 237 quoted comments across 124 seller pages, and exactly one mentions an item being out of stock. So there is no restock reliability figure here, no stockout rate by seller, and no ranking of who cancels least — our method is to report the gap rather than fill it with an estimate.
What we can say is that a stockout is the cheapest failure in this hobby. Nothing has shipped, nothing has crossed a border, and the money is still inside a system you hold an account with. That is a far better position than a parcel that stopped scanning or the wrong item on the warehouse shelf. If you are still building the order, how to buy reps covers the sequence.
